BEAR Naked Yoga

September 21, 2010

I have to say, bear, a very well executed pose. What pose exactly? Well, I’m not exactly sure that you can call this an asana as we generally know it. It looks like some illegitimate love child between navasana and happy baby pose.

An Australian internet news source, news.com.au, ran a silly little story begging for all sorts of terrible puns that found its way into the Dharma Chameleon’s inbox (oh, thank god!). This bear at Finland’s Ahtari Zoo apparently likes to razzle and dazzle on lookers  (no, not with spread eagle) with a full on show (again, no, not the spread eagle) of what appears to be yoga.

Seriously, since I started doing training I’ve become very amused and amazed by the world that is modern yoga. Yoga, according to Stephanie Syman’s book The Subtle Body has gone through a roller coaster of participation since it landed here in the West and established roots in the late 19th century. It was taboo, then it was en vogue, then it was shoved aside for step aerobics  and jazzercise(ugh! of all things…as always, I blame Reagan). Now yoga is back, and badder than ever. Yoga is so in the forefront of the general public’s mind that some tourist saw a bear doing a funny little thing with its legs and it makes international news as a yoga story.

Look bear, you’re really going to have to step up your game if you want to be truly earning your title of “yogi bear.” You’re probably going to even need to develop some vocal chords. I’m pretty sure there is no translation of Sanskrit text in to bear language. So, well, admirable try, but better luck next time.
