Touch Junkie

My name is Marla, and I’m an addict.

I’m like someone who got hooked on percocets after a surgery that “accidentally” flipped over the handle bars of their bike and then “mysteriously” was hit by a car after my prescription ran out.

I just love to be touched during  yoga class. And, seriously, not like bad touches. Please. It’s all good, loving touching in a yoga class…and I can’t get enough of it!

It had me wondering — is there a reason, ya know, psychologically? Well, it would seem that there are physiological effects of human touch (we’re not talking sexual here, pervs)that trigger psychological and emotional responses.  According to a recent study byBrigham Young University, human touch has real healing properties that temper stress and blood pressure.  Obviously, I didn’t read the real study but USA Today broke it down well enough for the common folks like myself.

I have had some instructors use some interesting methods on me recently. For one, Debi, the instructor I had at Bala Vinyasa stood on my hips. I went into a sloppy supta virasana and after she gently realigned my legs she then mounted me. (Again, stop being pervs) She gently placed each one of her feet in my hip creases and then applied her full adult human being weight to them. As daunting as such an experience inevitably sounds, it was amazing. I also like it when instructors sort of caress my back. I’m not sure what it is supposed to do? Is that for alignment? I mean, I tend to try and align myself when they touch me because I assume I was doing something wrong. So, success, if that was the goal.

In all seriousness, perhaps I should be questioning why this aspect of practicing is so appealing. Was I not held enough as a child? Don’t worry mom, no one is blaming you. Really though, I tend to go more with the “cat theory.” I will gravitate towards extra body heat.

It is also extremely possible that I’m just floored by the sheer compassion that these instructors must have to lovingly reach out their hands to touch my hot, sweaty, sweaty body.

    I don’t have much to add other than to say you are a perv. But also, do you have anything against including your full entries in the rss feed? I like reading your stuff in that context but if you prefer the page views I understand. Also, standing on your hips sounds intense. Nobody’s ever done that in my yoga classes.
